Perlite production
Perlite
Perlite is a natural volcanic glass found in deposits around the world. When heated to high temperatures, it expands into a lightweight, porous material with a white or off-white color and tiny spherical particles. This expanded perlite has excellent water and air retention properties, making it ideal for improving drainage and aeration in soil mixes used in horticulture.
Its inert nature means it won't break down over time, providing long-lasting benefits to root growth and preventing overwatering and root rot.
The production of expanded perlite involves mining raw perlite ore, crushing and screening it, then heating it in a rotary kiln at temperatures between 870°C and 980°C. As the water molecules vaporize, the perlite expands into its desired lightweight structure. After cooling, cleaning, and grading by size, expanded perlite is used in various applications such as horticulture, construction, and industry.
