Regulatory Change for Fluorspar in United States
The EPA issued administrative consequences to 52 entities under the AIM Act, affecting HFC production and indirectly influencing fluorospar demand.
Fluorspar production
Fluorspar is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2) that serves as the primary source of fluorine in various industrial applications. It is often found in vein deposits associated with granites and volcanic rocks, or as gangue material in hydrothermal deposits. The main uses for fluorspar include aluminum production, where it lowers the melting point of ore and removes impurities; steel production, where it decreases carbon content and improves quality; and the production of hydrofluoric acid, a key componen...
Fluorspar is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2) that serves as the primary source of fluorine in various industrial applications. It is often found in vein deposits associated with granites and volcanic rocks, or as gangue material in hydrothermal deposits.
The main uses for fluorspar include aluminum production, where it lowers the melting point of ore and removes impurities; steel production, where it decreases carbon content and improves quality; and the production of hydrofluoric acid, a key component in fluorocarbons and refrigerants. Hydrofluoric acid is also used to etch glass, stone, and metals.
Fluorspar mining typically employs open-pit or underground methods, depending on deposit depth and location. After mining, the ore is crushed and ground into a fine powder that undergoes froth flotation to separate fluorspar from other minerals. The resulting concentrate is then dried and shipped for further processing at smelters and refineries.
