This metallic element has a wide range of primary uses, notably in the production of high-strength steel alloys, catalysts, and electronic components. It is highly heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant, making it an ideal additive to improve the properties of metals and alloys. In steel, it enhances hardenability, strength, toughness, and wear resistance. Moreover, molybdenum is crucial in the chemical industry as a catalyst and in the production of lubricants.
Molybdenum is extracted from its primary ore, molybdenite, through a series of processes. First, molybdenite is concentrated through flotation, a method that separates minerals based on their hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties. Once concentrated, molybdenite concentrate is roasted to convert molybdenite to molybdenum trioxide. This compound is then reduced with hydrogen to produce molybdenum metal, often in the form of molybdenum rods or sheets. Some of the major producers of molybdenum include China, the United States, and Chile.
